A perfect yellow cake with a warm, creamy butterscotch sauce
Is it cold where you are? Because it is a winter wonderland here in Utah. I am currently wrapped up in two sweaters, sweatpants, fuzzy slippers, and seriously considering putting on gloves. One no-fail trick to warm me up during these snowy winters is comfort food. Something warm, hearty, and good for the soul. That is exactly what this butterscotch bread pudding cake is.
I remember having this bread pudding at my grandma’s house often during our weekly family get-togethers. The house was always warm and filled with more relatives and loved ones than there were places to sit. The kids were all corralled in the basement making a mess that probably took grandma the whole week to clean up. Us girls always got out our mom’s old prom dresses and shoes to play wedding. I think we spent more time fighting over who got to be the bride than actually acting out the wedding. It was all very political and moms were inevitably involved. But at the end of the night, what we all really looked forward to was the food. My grandma makes all sorts of delicious and fattening food; but I can honestly say this bread pudding is my favorite.
This is one of those family recipes that everyone in the family loves but outsiders are a little skeptical. Truth be told, we call this dessert “cake and gravy” in my family. Outside of this post, I will always call it cake and gravy. I had to change the name in the post title, otherwise you would have never given this recipe the time of day and you would be seriously missing out. Of course this isn’t a traditional meat gravy. It’s a warm creamy, caramel, butterscotch type sauce. So good. This cake is so easy and quick to whip up on any cozy evening.
Do you have any funny family recipes?
