Deciding what to serve on Father’s Day can be a tough one. You want to serve something special but the men in our lives often don’t appreciate the fancy food that we deem “special.” I believe that a good burger is your answer. Burgers are one of the manliest foods that you can serve. And let’s admit it-we all love them. It’s an all American food that’s simple and keeps the mess out of the kitchen. However; the simple nature of the burger sometimes makes us feel like it can’t be a special occasion food. Well, I’m here to change that. Here are a few ways to spruce up that simple burger and turn it into an extra special meal.
Sauteed mushrooms look so fancy and taste so good. All it takes is a frying pan and a little butter (I use this pan here). In case you’ve never sauteed mushrooms before this is what I do. Melt two tablespoons of butter in a small pan and add one cup of sliced mushrooms. Sprinkle them with salt and pepper and a tablespoon of A1 sauce and saute over medium low heat for about 5 minutes. Done.
Fried Onions or Onion Rings
I love a little crunch on my burger and I believe the best way to achieve that is with fried onions (think green bean casserole). Onion rings are another great way to add lots of flavor and crunch but they definitely require a bit more work. I tried this recipe last time I made hamburgers and the family loved them!
Ketchup and mustard are all fine and dandy but they aren’t all that special. Try mixing a half cup of steak sauce with two tablespoons of mayo and some fresh ground pepper. This probably seems like an A1 ad but I really just love A1. You could also try a little bit of teriyaki sauce, blue cheese dressing, or a favorite barbecue sauce to mix things up a bit.
If you like teriyaki burgers adding some grilled pineapple is a great way to go. You can get a really amazing burger with a slice of swiss cheese, teriyaki sauce, and a bit of grilled pineapple. Perfection I tell you.
I have nothing against a simple slice of cheddar cheese but let’s not be narrow minded here. You’re cheese options are kind of endless. Some of my favorite bugger toppers are: blue cheese, Swiss, and sharp cheddar. Mix it up and try something new!
I don’t know that there is much more that I can say here. Bacon is almost a given.
Is there anything you can’t add guacamole to? Really? We use guacamole to add a little bit of creamy goodness for my boys that are dairy free. But I think anyone can appreciate a little guac in their life.
Topping a burger with a fried seemed a little weird to me at first. But then I actually tried it. You guys, it’s life changing. Be sure that the yolk is still runny so then you get all of that juicy goodness when you bite into it. Yum.
A Better Bun
Think of your hamburger like a really good sandwich. You wouldn’t make your gourmet sandwich on super flimsy $1 bread right? No way. The same goes for your hamburger bun. A mediocre bun is going to make a mediocre burger. Try toasting your buns on the grill with a little bit of butter and garlic salt for some extra flavor.
Good luck on all of your burger endeavors! Let me know what creations that you come up with.
Until next time,
